the blues roots grow surprisingly deep in the finnish music scene. from this fertile ground rises singer emilia sisco, who debuts on timmion with her phenomenal single -don t believe you like that-. with her strong background in fusing blues, r&b and jazz, emilia apparently slips also nicely into the dark soulful grooves of cold diamond & mink. in -don t believe you like that- emilia sets herself into the role of a mistreated lover, who still tries to see a speck of hope in the doomed relationship. by dubbing herself, and accompanying the lyric with graceful harmonies, she succeeds in building a powerful beat ballad, that should appeal to the darker end of the dance floor. there s a special lane in history for soul music this understated. it s cool and intimate at the same time, like there s something dangerous lurking under the surface. so roll up something nice, if that s your thing, and hop along for the ride.

mr. k turns to the funkier side of disco on the latest 12-inch from most excellent unlimited, working his magic on a couple cuts that still retain the same power to fill dance floors they had back in the day. - love the life you live is one of those rare songs that was big for me when i first started djing, and still jams today,- notes krivit, who gives another stripped-down, bass-heavy edit to the irresistible kool & the gang classic. one for the b-boys as well as the loft heads, mr. k s edit gradually builds on the hard-charging rhythm with a slinky keyboard solo, punchy horn riffs and breaks, breaks, breaks. gary toms empire ruled the summer of 75 with -7-6-5-4-3-2-1 (blow your whistle),- and progressive djs looking for a follow-up soon discovered another mover in the band s repertoire. -drive my car- is a lennon/mccartney cover that bears little resemblance to the original, and indeed most fans would be hard-pressed to identify any similarities at all in danny krivit s reworked version. stripping out the vocals and chorus and leaving just the rumbling low end groove, mr. k s edit motors along for a cool 7 minutes, laced throughout with short change-ups to elevate the energy. both tunes spread over their own sides of a 12-inch to ensure full-frequency clarity and power!

cordial recordings in partnership with miami legend willie clarke are proud to release this unreleased version of ‘stand up for what you want’ by kat roberts. the song had previously been released on 12&#8243,,, with kat doubling up with les brown, who provided a motivational speech throughout the song. the version we’re releasing on the a side is the luscious solo vocal version by kat which had sat on tape since it’s recording in 84. on the flip we’ve used a small extract of les original vocal before kat lets rip.

when cities collide iii features lithium parasites which is a project from former ultradyne member alex lugo together with alonzo, who released a great record with wt records last year, on this rotterhague release their combined strength brings out what sounds like dystopian cruising music. watch those crumbled skylines pass by. dj overdose does what dj overdose does.

thom nagy, journalist and passionate musician, makes the ep -you don t know-, which we release digitally as well as vinyl, to something very special. two of the four tracks included on the ep, called -bloom- and -you don t know-, are due to him. the disc is refined with two remixes by dandara and arutani, who met each other through the basel-based label lokd. they created a wonderful remix of the track -you don t know-. last but not least, we can look forward to a remix of nagy s track -bloom- by madmotormiquel and fulltone.

there’s a reason why so many of house music’s early releases have endured over the decades. the best of them have a quality that defies logic. early house records like heard s own -washing machine,- or the -no way back- by adonis, still have the power to stun listeners and drive clubs wild. they sound alien and beautiful, simultaneously ingrained within us and so unlike everything that followed. and few sound as beautiful, or as alien, as -can you feel it.- by 1986, heard—who was born and bred in chicago and been playing in bands as a drummer—had already proved to the world that he was a master of poignant, enthralling house. the previous year’s elegant “mystery of love,” originally released on alleviated records, had featured an insistent ascending bassline repeating under a plaintive, swooning analog synth, with a gentle, conga-led rhythm setting the pace. it was soon rerecorded in a slightly more fleshed-out style, this time featuring frequent collaborator robert owens on vocals—”there’s a moment in our lives when we all must try the mystery of love”—and rereleased on d.j. international.

following some now cult releases on mutli culti, turbo recordings (with the much-acclaimed “mz”) and his recent lp “lotos land” on japanese imprint endless flight, our favourite east-berlin born child sascha funke is finally coming up with an ep on hippie dance’s sister label your and your hippie friends. “i guess more than one of you have noticed my obsession with sascha funke’s music over the past years since it is an essential part in my dj sets. after the pause he gave his solo work to put his attention into his amazing band project saschienne together with julienne dessagne (aka fantastic twins, also his partner in life), he came back with a really cool ep on kompakt records which i played over and over and left me wanting for more. being close friends gave me the luxury of having access to his material before other people and when i would visit the coolest couple in berlin, sascha would always play me his new tunes in the car while rolling through the city. every time i would ask for those tracks to play them and in the club, people that i would play with would often ask who was behind them, as it happened with tiga one night in cologne, and eventually led to sascha’s music being released on turbo recordings and multi culti the following months. now i finally got the chance and honour to release a sascha funke ep on our own humble label... acatenango. like every time, it all started with me visiting berlin, sascha playing his new material while cruising around on board of his german car, me getting in trance while listening to it, asking for it and playing it right away in my next sets. three super cool tracks, all very different from each other but somehow connected with the inimitable funke touch. powerful yet elegant, hypnotic yet fun, brutal yet sophisticated. sascha funke... he’s a hippie and he’s a friend.” rebolledo

some used to think that here s a guy who s just too cute to be underground, but sebastien bouchet proved them all wrong - with releases like the trippy -fallen angel- ep (kompakt 210) or his gutsy contribution to kompakt s speicher series (kompakt extra 77). he also had a spectacular appearance on you and your hippie friends inaugurating release -a very nice combinado volume uno- (yayhf 01) with the tune -captain drag- - which went on to be played around the world, from clubs and festivals to chanel fashion runways. now, sebastien returns with coyote cry, his first full-blown ep for the hippie dance sister label: eclectic and unique, this five tracker reflects different sides and moods in his work, but always takes the momentum center stage - from the guitar-infused vocal shaker jambe de bois to the heavy-duty bass of jatagarazi or the melancholic drive of the glistening title cut.

k15 returns to wotnot after more killer releases on eglo & wild oats, a collaboration with henry wu, and remixes for nubya garcia, colm k (on tiffs joints) and wotnot s own william florelle, not to mention the beautiful record earlier this year under his culross close alias. we re all creative but somehow, being creative has become a class within itself, often defined and measured by the whims of popular culture and monetary gain, which leads us to devalue what we create if we are not successful by those metrics. we are all creative, we all use our experience, talent and feeling to shape and we should be glad we create anything. this ep holds onto this mantra tightly throughout, reflecting both the meditative and joyful effects of unimpeded creativity. the title track begins with k15s signature introspection, deep washes of jazz-inflected textures before exploding into a rapturous syncopated synth groove. b1 communion explores the spiritual angle with a devotional piano cadence over bouncing drum pattern, with interlocking bass and synth rhythms adding to the hypnotic mood. wrapping up the release is a warm, deep-soak hip hop instrumental titled you re alive (theres still time), a message to self but also a beacon of hope to those who have maybe not created as much as they would have liked, or have strayed from the path the intended to take.

coming in strong with an update on another classic track, glitterbox recordings presents krystal davis so smooth featuring remixes from kon and yam who? alongside the original and an instrumental. one of the last in a rare breed of dedicated crate-diggers, kons vast knowledge of the heavily swung rhythms of classic disco make him a reverent remixer for this mid-tempo krystal davis disco hit, originally released in 1985 on new york label urban rock records inc. his version amps up the pace, tailoring the record for any discerning contemporary disco set. midnight riot records head yam who? goes blissed out with the synths for an irresistible mix that’s smoother than smooth.

another gem from the archives gets a much needed official reissue. the 12inch mix of you combines the original funk riffs, string arrangement and joyous piano with a squelchy lead synth to elevate the track to new levels. anyone who saw that momentous back to back between ge-ology and red greg at dekmantel last summer will know the power of this one. my music on the b side is another favourite from the diggers spiritual soul from samuel jonathan johnson, tip!

so you wanna be a star 24 carat disco gold from 1980 right here. mtume, led by legendary jazz percussionist and all-round musical visionary james mtume had a number of massive hits and can count quite a few classics within their repertoire ( juicy fruit anyone?). this flawlessly arranged, funk drenched jam speaks on the dangers of living life too fast and relying on those who can t be trusted. remember, this was the beginning of the 1980s, the disco era had began to fade amidst the drug hazed excesses of the previous decade, while the music continued forging it s path skyward with tremendous records like this one. so you wanna really has a message and that s not surprising considering it has one of the most underrated production teams behind it in the shape of mtume / lucas. a true gem of the post-disco era. essential and rare. this repress of the original epic promo from 1980 is backed with a brand new re-edit from one of nyc s disco kings mr.k aka danny krivit. with almost half a century spent behind the turntables in nyc and beyond he surely understands records like so you wanna be a star intrinsically, he was, after all, there when it all happened! this classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original epic label disco 12inch artwork and has been remastered from sonys original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.

mindblowing afro soul music from ivory coast served up by an obscure artist who only recorded four albums in between 1979 and the beginning of the 80’s. he created an original funky fusion with bété langage. a selection of four amazing tracks recorded in abidjan on two different records label called war records and as records. the music here is a mixture of funk with heavy basslines, traditional percussions, funky guitar riffs, nice horns section and lyrics in beté. the song «demonde» is inspired by harmonies of the famous «dance to the drummer beat» by herman kelly. those two rare records were found by afrobrazilero aka djamel hammadi and never appeared on the vinyl market. it’s almost impossible to have infos about this singer and composer neither the musicians involved in the recording sessions. most of the trace of the recording session were lost by the labels we licensed the tracks with. unique, pressed on a deluxe vinyl, remastered by the carvery, this very funky album is a must have for all the afro funk lovers!
